The ~352 calories per hour figure is an estimate for a 155 lb person using a MET of 5, and your actual burn will shift based on your body weight, how often you're actively running versus standing, and the temperature conditions. Log your softball sessions in the Mariposas app to track how it fits into your weekly activity and get a personalized read on your calorie output.

Calculated as MET (5) × body weight (kg) × hours. How this works.

What to expect in a softball class

Your first session will likely feel like a warmup jog, some light throwing to loosen the arm, and then batting practice or fielding drills before any scrimmage play begins. The pace is conversational between plays, then suddenly very fast when a ball is hit your direction. You'll throw, catch, run the bases, and probably spend a fair amount of time in the dugout or outfield waiting, which is completely normal for the sport. The social element is real: most recreational softball settings involve a lot of talking between plays, so the learning curve is eased by teammates who will coach you on positioning in real time.

Tips for your first softball class

  • Protect your throwing arm before the game by starting with short, soft tosses at 20 to 30 feet and gradually working out to your full throwing distance. Going full strength on a cold arm is the fastest route to shoulder soreness.
  • For batting, choke up on the bat handle by an inch or two if the barrel feels heavy. A shorter lever gives you better bat control and faster swing speed until you build rotational strength.
  • At the plate, watch the ball leave the pitcher's hand, not the pitcher's face. Your brain needs that early read on the trajectory to time a swing on a pitch arriving in under a second.
  • Wear actual athletic shoes with lateral support, not running shoes. A cross-trainer or softball cleat handles the sudden side-to-side cuts far better than a shoe built only for forward motion.
  • Learn your cutoff responsibilities as an outfielder before your first real game. When you catch a ball, there's a specific infielder who positions as a relay target, and throwing over their head kills the play.

What affects how many calories softball burns

The MET of 5 reflects a moderate average across an entire game, but your actual burn spikes hard during base running and drops during standing time in the field. Heavier players will burn more calories at this same MET, and pitchers who throw every inning or leadoff hitters who run the bases repeatedly will work considerably harder than a right fielder who sees three balls all game. Humidity and heat add physiological stress that ramps up effort even when the activity looks casual.

Three things move your number most: body weight (a heavier body burns more for the same activity, that's why the table runs from 125 to 225 lb), duration (calories scale with time), and intensity. A softball you push hard burns more than an easy one, because effort is what the MET value of 5 represents, an average for this activity. Your fitness level and how much you rest between efforts shift it too, so treat these as a solid estimate rather than an exact count.

How we calculate softball calories

Every number here uses the standard energy-expenditure formula: calories ≈ MET × body weight (kg) × time (hours). The MET value of 5 for softball comes from the published Compendium of Physical Activities, the same reference researchers and fitness trackers use. We convert your weight to kilograms and multiply through, no fudge factors. See our methodology for the full formula and sources.
